**Reading and Writing Numbers Up to 99,999**

**Place Value Chart:** TTh (Ten Thousand) | Th (Thousand) | H (Hundred) | T (Ten) | O (Ones)

**Building Big Numbers:**

10 Ones = 1 Ten = 10

10 Tens = 1 Hundred = 100

10 Hundreds = 1 Thousand = 1,000

10 Thousands = 1 Ten Thousand = 10,000

**Number Names:** Read left to right by place value. Example: 45,867 = Forty-five thousand eight hundred sixty-seven

**Using Commas:** Write commas after TTh place (10,000 not 10000) to read easily.

**Nearest Tens, Hundreds, Thousands:**

  • Round to nearest ten: Look at ones place. If 5 or more, round up.
  • Round to nearest hundred: Look at tens place. If 5 or more, round up.
  • Round to nearest thousand: Look at hundreds place. If 5 or more, round up.
  • Example: 2,346 → Nearest 10 is 2,350 | Nearest 100 is 2,300 | Nearest 1,000 is 2,000

**Comparing Numbers:** Compare TTh place first; if equal, compare Th place, and so on.

**Diagrams to Remember:** Place value chart with columns TTh-Th-H-T-O shows each digit's position and value.

**Don't Confuse:** Position of digit matters more than the digit itself. The digit 4 in 49,014 (representing 40,000) is larger than digit 9 in 9,990 (representing 9,000).
