How to use this sheet. Plain boxes cover the topics tested in the annual exam. Boxes marked ★ Formative only cover topics that are still in the CBSE 2026-27 syllabus but are assessed only formatively (class activities, not the annual exam). They are included so the sheet is complete, and because many of them come back in Class 12 and JEE. In the trigonometry formulas, \(n\) stands for any integer (\(n \in \mathbb{Z}\)).

  • In \(P(x, y, z)\): \(x, y, z\) are the distances from the YZ, ZX and XY planes
  • On x-axis \((x, 0, 0)\); y-axis \((0, y, 0)\); z-axis \((0, 0, z)\)
  • In XY-plane \((x, y, 0)\); YZ-plane \((0, y, z)\); ZX-plane \((x, 0, z)\)

Signs in the octants

OctantIIIIIIIVVVIVIIVIII
x+−−++−−+
y++−−++−−
z++++−−−−

Distance formula

$$PQ = \sqrt{(x_2 - x_1)^2 + (y_2 - y_1)^2 + (z_2 - z_1)^2}$$
  • Distance from origin: \(OP = \sqrt{x^2 + y^2 + z^2}\)

Formative only: section formula

  • Internal, ratio \(m : n\): \(\left(\dfrac{mx_2 + nx_1}{m + n},\ \dfrac{my_2 + ny_1}{m + n},\ \dfrac{mz_2 + nz_1}{m + n}\right)\)
  • External: \(\left(\dfrac{mx_2 - nx_1}{m - n},\ \dfrac{my_2 - ny_1}{m - n},\ \dfrac{mz_2 - nz_1}{m - n}\right)\)
  • Mid-point: \(\left(\dfrac{x_1 + x_2}{2},\ \dfrac{y_1 + y_2}{2},\ \dfrac{z_1 + z_2}{2}\right)\)
  • Centroid: \(\left(\dfrac{x_1 + x_2 + x_3}{3},\ \dfrac{y_1 + y_2 + y_3}{3},\ \dfrac{z_1 + z_2 + z_3}{3}\right)\)

12Limits and Derivatives

Limits: basics

  • \(\lim_{x \to a} f(x)\) exists \(\iff\) LHL \(= \lim_{x \to a^-} f(x)\) equals RHL \(= \lim_{x \to a^+} f(x)\)
  • \(\lim_{x \to a} f(x)\) and \(f(a)\) may differ (one may exist without the other)
  • Polynomial: \(\lim_{x \to a} f(x) = f(a)\)
  • Rational: \(\lim_{x \to a} \dfrac{g(x)}{h(x)} = \dfrac{g(a)}{h(a)}\) if \(h(a) \ne 0\)

Algebra of limits

  • \(\lim [f(x) \pm g(x)] = \lim f(x) \pm \lim g(x)\)
  • \(\lim [f(x)\,g(x)] = \lim f(x) \cdot \lim g(x)\)
  • \(\lim \dfrac{f(x)}{g(x)} = \dfrac{\lim f(x)}{\lim g(x)}\), if \(\lim g(x) \ne 0\)
  • \(\lim [k\,f(x)] = k \lim f(x)\)
  • Sandwich theorem: if \(f \le g \le h\) and \(\lim f = \lim h = l\), then \(\lim g = l\)

Standard limits

$$\lim_{x \to a} \frac{x^n - a^n}{x - a} = n\,a^{n-1} \qquad \lim_{x \to 0} \frac{\sin x}{x} = 1 \qquad \lim_{x \to 0} \frac{1 - \cos x}{x} = 0 \qquad \lim_{x \to 0} \frac{\tan x}{x} = 1$$ $$\lim_{x \to 0} \frac{e^x - 1}{x} = 1 \qquad \lim_{x \to 0} \frac{\log_e (1 + x)}{x} = 1 \qquad \lim_{x \to 0} \frac{a^x - 1}{x} = \log_e a$$

\(x\) in radians. Useful: \(\lim_{x \to 0} \dfrac{\sin ax}{bx} = \dfrac{a}{b}\). The exponential and logarithmic limits are listed in the CBSE 2026-27 syllabus.

Derivative: definition

  • At a point: \(f'(a) = \lim_{h \to 0} \dfrac{f(a + h) - f(a)}{h}\)
  • First principle: $$\frac{d}{dx}f(x) = f'(x) = \lim_{h \to 0} \frac{f(x + h) - f(x)}{h}$$
  • \(f'(a)\) = slope of the tangent to \(y = f(x)\) at \((a, f(a))\) = rate of change of \(f\) at \(a\)

Rules of differentiation

  • \((u \pm v)' = u' \pm v'\)
  • Product: \((uv)' = u'v + uv'\)
  • Quotient: \(\left(\dfrac{u}{v}\right)' = \dfrac{u'v - uv'}{v^2},\ v \ne 0\)
  • \((k\,u)' = k\,u'\); derivative of a constant \(= 0\)

Standard derivatives

\(f(x)\)\(x^n\)\(c\)\(\sin x\)\(\cos x\)\(\tan x\)\(\cot x\)\(\sec x\)\(\csc x\)
\(f'(x)\)\(nx^{n-1}\)0\(\cos x\)\(-\sin x\)\(\sec^2 x\)\(-\csc^2 x\)\(\sec x \tan x\)\(-\csc x \cot x\)

Polynomial: \(\dfrac{d}{dx}\left(a_nx^n + a_{n-1}x^{n-1} + \dots + a_1x + a_0\right) = na_nx^{n-1} + (n-1)a_{n-1}x^{n-2} + \dots + a_1\)

Formative only: chain rule

  • \(\dfrac{d}{dx} f(g(x)) = f'(g(x)) \cdot g'(x)\). Example: \(\dfrac{d}{dx}\sin(x^2) = 2x\cos(x^2)\)

13Statistics

Central tendency (recall)

  • Mean: \(\bar x = \dfrac{\sum x_i}{n}\); for frequencies \(\bar x = \dfrac{\sum f_i x_i}{N}\), \(N = \sum f_i\)
  • Step deviation: \(u_i = \dfrac{x_i - A}{h}\), \(\ \bar x = A + \dfrac{\sum f_i u_i}{N} \times h\)
  • Median (ungrouped, sorted): \(n\) odd: \(\left(\frac{n+1}{2}\right)\)th value; \(n\) even: mean of the \(\frac{n}{2}\)th and \(\left(\frac{n}{2} + 1\right)\)th values
  • Median (grouped): \(\ M = l + \dfrac{\frac{N}{2} - C}{f} \times h\)

\(l\) = lower limit of the median class, \(C\) = cumulative frequency before it, \(f\) = its frequency, \(h\) = class width.

Range and mean deviation

  • Range \(=\) maximum value \(-\) minimum value
  • Ungrouped, about \(a\): \(\ \text{M.D.}(a) = \dfrac{\sum |x_i - a|}{n}\)
  • \(\text{M.D.}(\bar x) = \dfrac{\sum |x_i - \bar x|}{n}\), \(\ \text{M.D.}(M) = \dfrac{\sum |x_i - M|}{n}\)
  • Grouped: \(\ \text{M.D.}(\bar x) = \dfrac{\sum f_i |x_i - \bar x|}{N}\)
  • Grouped: \(\ \text{M.D.}(M) = \dfrac{\sum f_i |x_i - M|}{N}\)

For continuous data, \(x_i\) is the mid-point of each class.

Variance and SD: ungrouped data

  • \(\sigma^2 = \dfrac{1}{n}\sum (x_i - \bar x)^2\), \(\ \sigma = \sqrt{\dfrac{1}{n}\sum (x_i - \bar x)^2}\)
  • Equivalent: \(\sigma^2 = \dfrac{\sum x_i^2}{n} - (\bar x)^2\)

Variance and SD: frequency distributions

  • \(\sigma^2 = \dfrac{1}{N}\sum f_i (x_i - \bar x)^2\), \(\ \sigma = \sqrt{\dfrac{1}{N}\sum f_i (x_i - \bar x)^2}\)
  • \(\sigma = \dfrac{1}{N}\sqrt{N\sum f_i x_i^2 - \left(\sum f_i x_i\right)^2}\)

Shortcut (step-deviation) method

$$y_i = \frac{x_i - A}{h} \qquad \sigma^2 = \frac{h^2}{N^2}\left[N\sum f_i y_i^2 - \left(\sum f_i y_i\right)^2\right] \qquad \sigma = \frac{h}{N}\sqrt{N\sum f_i y_i^2 - \left(\sum f_i y_i\right)^2}$$

\(A\) = assumed mean, \(h\) = class width. Adding a constant to every value does not change \(\sigma\); multiplying every value by \(k\) multiplies \(\sigma\) by \(|k|\).

14Probability

  • Mutually exclusive: \(A \cap B = \varphi\)
  • Exhaustive: \(E_1 \cup E_2 \cup \dots \cup E_n = S\); mutually exclusive and exhaustive if also \(E_i \cap E_j = \varphi\) for \(i \ne j\)

Axiomatic probability

  • \(P(E) \ge 0\) for every event \(E\); \(\ P(S) = 1\)
  • \(E, F\) mutually exclusive \(\Rightarrow P(E \cup F) = P(E) + P(F)\)
  • For outcomes \(\omega_i\): \(0 \le P(\omega_i) \le 1\), \(\ \sum P(\omega_i) = 1\), \(\ P(A) = \sum_{\omega_i \in A} P(\omega_i)\)
  • \(P(\varphi) = 0\); \(\ 0 \le P(A) \le 1\)
  • Equally likely outcomes: \(\ P(A) = \dfrac{n(A)}{n(S)}\)

Rules

  • Addition rule: \(P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A \cap B)\), i.e. \(P(A \text{ or } B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A \text{ and } B)\)
  • Mutually exclusive: \(P(A \cup B) = P(A) + P(B)\)
  • Complement: \(P(\text{not } A) = P(A') = 1 - P(A)\)
  • \(P(A \text{ but not } B) = P(A - B) = P(A) - P(A \cap B)\)
  • Mutually exclusive and exhaustive \(E_1, \dots, E_n\): \(\ P(E_1) + P(E_2) + \dots + P(E_n) = 1\)
  • Three events: \(P(A \cup B \cup C) = P(A) + P(B) + P(C) - P(A \cap B) - P(B \cap C) - P(A \cap C) + P(A \cap B \cap C)\)

Formative only: random experiments

  • Random experiment: more than one possible outcome, and the outcome cannot be predicted in advance. Sample space \(S\) = set of all possible outcomes; each element is a sample point.
