Most "important chapters" lists for CBSE boards are guesswork dressed up as advice. This one isn't: we pulled 1,611 Class 10 Science board questions from the 2022-2026 papers, tagged each one by chapter, marks and question type, and weighted them against the official CBSE 086 blueprint for 2026-27. Here's exactly where the marks are, which chapters are gaining or losing weight year over year, and three topics that are officially outside the board paper this year.
The CBSE 2026-27 Science curriculum marks a handful of topics as formative-only — not examinable in the board paper: Periodic Classification of Elements, Evolution (Heredity itself is still fully examinable, just not the evolution portion), and the Electric Motor / Generator / Electromagnetic Induction section of Magnetic Effects of Electric Current. This isn't a prediction — it's stated in the official blueprint, and it lines up with the data: these topics barely appear in the 2023-2026 papers already (a few stray 2022 Periodic Classification questions, nothing since). Worth knowing as you plan your board-exam revision schedule — though these are still part of the NCERT syllabus and worth learning for the concepts themselves, not just the marks.
The theory paper is 80 marks across five units, and this split hasn't moved in years: Chemical Substances (25), World of Living (25), Natural Phenomena (12), Effects of Current (13), Natural Resources (5). What changes year to year is which chapters inside each unit get the emphasis — that's what the tables below show, estimated by reallocating each unit's fixed marks according to 5 years of real exam frequency, weighted toward the most recent papers.

Ranked by absolute estimated marks rather than share within their unit, the highest-value chapters for 2027 are: Life Processes (9.4), Electricity (8.0), Light — Reflection and Refraction (7.2), Acids, Bases and Salts (7.0), and Metals and Non-metals (6.6) — together worth just under half the entire 80-mark theory paper. If your revision time is limited, this is the order to work through it in.
Three chapters are trending up over the last five years — Metals and Non-metals, Control and Coordination, and Electricity — meaning recent papers are drawing more marks from them than papers from a few years ago did. Three are trending down: Carbon and its Compounds, Heredity, and Magnetic Effects of Electric Current. None of these should be dropped from your revision — they're still worth real marks — but if you're deciding what to revise first, weight your time toward the risers.
Honestly, split by layer. The 80-mark unit split is straight from the official blueprint and hasn't changed in years — treat that as fact. The chapter-within-unit numbers above come from real exam frequency, recency-weighted, but the per-chapter-per-year sample is thin enough that these are a directional tilt, not a precise forecast — a chapter estimated at 6.2 marks could reasonably land anywhere from 4 to 8 in the actual paper. Use this to decide revision order and where to double down on practice, not as a guarantee of what will appear.
